After touring Florence, we took a day trip to the medieval city, San Gimignano located in the Sienna provence. It is about an hour south of Florence. The quaint town is known for its well preserved 14 medieval towers. I thought the town was worth a stop for the architecture, shopping, as well as a visit to the Etruscan Museum and the Romanesque-gothic church of Sant'Agostino. If you hike to the top of the city, you can get a spectacular view of the Tuscan countryside. If you are a shopper, there are numerous stores containing pottery, wines, and other hand made items. Moving onto Florence Italy

After touring Venice, we traveled to the Tuscany Region with the intent to stay in Florence. I think the best lodging locations are close to the city center if you want to be able to really experience the city. Check out San Lorenzo Bed and Breakfast for a convenient city center location. However, if you would rather be located in the countryside, Al Podere Le Cave is a wonderful choice.

The city of Florence was of course the birth place of the renaissance and it and the surrounding area are packed with art, churches, and history from this period. The city center is dominated by the Santa Maria del Fiore and I have to admit it took my breath away. It lived up to all of my expectations. I was also amazed by how much art is packed into Florence. It is really an open air museum. You can see many great works of art just by walking the city.

If you are only in the city a few days, this is what I would suggest. Tour the Santa Maria del Fiore and climb to the top of the Dome. The views of the city and surrounding countryside are amazing. While in this location, take an hour to tour the Museum of the Cathedral to see Michelangelo's "Pieta." If you only have time to visit two major museums, make Galleria dell'Accademia (home to Michelangelo's "David") and The "Uffizi Gallery" home to numerous renaissance masters your top stops. I would suggest purchasing tickets ahead of time so that you can just walk into both museums rather than standing in line. If you like science, the Museo Galileo should also be on your list.

If you are a shopper, Florence is known for its leather. You can purchase a really well made leather coat, satchel, or shoes at the many stores located through out the city. Just make sure that you are buying Florentine leather, not a Chinese knock off.

Dining in Florence varies depending what you are looking for. There are numerous cafes located throughout the city where you can grab a slice pizza or sample some gelato. If you want a sit down dinner, you could pick just about and sidewalk cafe and do well. I had wonderful meals with extremely fresh vegetables, wonderfully seasoned meats, and delicious pasta all paired with a very simple house wine.

Day 2 in Venice

We started our second day in Venice by taking a water taxi over from Lido. Once in Venice, we started the day by going to Campanile di San Marco and taking the elevator to the bell tower to enjoy an amazing view of the surrounding area. We also took advantage of small lines, and decided to tour Saint Mark's Basilica. The entrance is free, but we paid to get access to the museum. It was worth it. The church is really spectacular and is full of well preserved mosaics and we were treated to an amazing pipe organ concert while we were there. We had a quick lunch and then continued touring. We made our way to the The Peggy Guggenheim Museum. The museum holds pieces of art from the 20th century and was really worth a look. Our final stop of the day was the San Giorgio Maggiore, a 16th Century church. We had to take a water taxi to the island on which the church resides.

Travels in Venice

I am back from a Summer of travels and have much to blog about. I spent the summer touring Italy and Montana. Both of these destinations offer travelers beautiful country, friendly locals, and culture all of its own. I started in Italy, so that is where I will start this blog.

Day 1 - Venice

I started my trip, with my family along for the ride, in Venice, Italy. We flew into the Venice airport, collected our luggage, and took a water taxi to Lido, Italy. I chose Lido because it has easy access to Venice and offers more of a relaxed seaside setting for the family to come back to after a day of touring in Venice. For accommodations, our guide offers two Lido bed and breakfasts, Casa Mari Bed & Breakfast and Oasis Bed and Breakfast.

Once situated, we purchased tickets on the waterbus and in 10 minutes we were in St. Marks Square. We took a guided tour through the Doges' Palace and then spent the remainder of our time wandering through canals, stopping at vendors for a cup of fruit or a slice of pizza. For travelers who want to be on the island of Venice, we also offer three bed and breakfasts Sandra Bed and Breakfast, BBvenezia, and Al Campaniel Guest House. All of these B&Bs are in locations perfect for experiencing Venice's waterways.

After a day of touring Venice, we came back to Lido had a leisurely dinner, walked to the end of our street and took a stroll on the beach leading to the Adriatic Sea.

Standing on the front stoop you can watch the sun setting over the Hudson, and, if you are lucky, the QE2 may be passing. At street level you will see an ally way entrance, once a "horsewalk" that led to a two-story building at the rear. The stable disappeared many years ago, and what is left is a large garden which all guests are encouraged to enjoy. Sitting there in the evening, you can see the lights of The Empire State Building, a beacon to the north. Inside, the parlor floor is filled with antiques and paintings.

A curved staircase leads to the second floor where three rooms are available for guests. There are two large double rooms, one with a queen size bed and the other with twin beds. I am a painter and the 3rd floor is my own pied-a-terre and studio. There is also a single room on that floor that shares a bathroom with me.

Bed & Breakfast. We all understand the Bed part: a nice, relaxing stay away from home maybe as part of a road trip, in friendly company and in a restful atmosphere. The Breakfast part we also understand, nourishing replenishment in the form of home-prepared delicious food. But do we understand the limits of this “breakfast”? To fully understand the lofty heights to which the term, function and practice of this “breakfast” can be taken, we should take a look at the world’s most expensive breakfast, which cost a staggering £22,000 (over $35,000).
The meal consists of a simple set up of a croissant, jam, coffee and a Chambord and champagne cocktail. Then comes the twist (read: expensive part), as the croissant itself is hand-decorated with gold (edible, of course) and diamonds (maybe not so edible, but you could try!), which is in turn accompanied with a fine spread of Bar le Duc jam, hand-seeded for extra luxury. To wash this sumptuous feast down, you are then presented with what is arguably the world’s most expensive coffee (how it tastes, I have no idea), Kopi Luwak. Add to this the coup de grace (mentioned shortly) and you have a meal fit for a king, steeped in lavish opulence.
The aforementioned finishing touch was a Chambord (French raspberry liqueur) and champagne cocktail, which made up the majority of the price at £20,000 ($32,000). However, even the bottle the liqueur is served from positively reeks of decadence, as it’s encrusted with gold, diamonds and pearls and is actually worth around $2.4 million. Now that’s pouring in style.

So the next time you come across what you might think is an expensive breakfast, just realize how much you could be spending.

Larkfield is a beautiful Chambres d'hôte built in the early nineties; it is just off of the main A75 'toll free', motorway from Clermont Ferrand to Bezier (there is now a small toll for the viaduct at Millau but this is worth paying just for the experience let alone the time saved, it can be bypassed). The B&B is very easy to find being between Soubes & the A75, less than a kilometre from the autoroute junction 52. The village is also under an hours drive from Montpellier International Airport with cheap flights from both Ryan Air (Stanstead) and FlyBe(Gatwick). We are only 2 motorway hours from the Spanish border where there is cheap shopping, just off the motorway.

Larkfield is a good stop off point on a road trip to Spain. The same autoroute makes transit to the coast much quicker, the nearest beach is now just 35 minutes away. For better amenities the historic town of Lodève is only 5 km away with supermarkets and petrol stations. The local area has much to offer and the nearby coast is one of the best anywhere. We will be pleased to give advice when we know your interests.

The accommodation is modern and comfortable. If has a mix of twin and double rooms, if you have a preference ask in advance. All bedrooms have wardrobes, dressing tables and bedside cabinets with reading lights. Toilet facilities are en suite, modern and comfortable. Some rooms are large enough for a third bed, if this is of interest please ask for triple occupancy price.

Complimentary tea, coffee and cold drinks are available in the downstairs kitchenette. In the winter gas central heating ensures your comfort.

Guide books are available to give further suggestions for your stay if you are not just passing through.

French television is provided in the TV lounge. Linen and towels are provided. Washing machines are available in the outside utility room, much quieter. Being a Mediterranean climate bad days are not common but they do supply games, jigsaws and books just in case.

Optional English breakfasts, evening meals and packed lunches can be provided. In summer they can offer a barbecue either by the house or the pool.

A Bed and Breakfast in Greenwich Village

Rooms To Let is in historic Greenwich Village, Manhattan New York. The bed and breakfast is just moments away from the trendy Meatpacking District with its designer shops and fashionable clubs. Yet when you turn onto Horatio Street you are in a tranquil oasis. Near the magnificent new Hudson River Park, this part of the West Village is where you want to be in Manhattan. Although the location is central, it is a calm, quiet retreat from the action found all around.

This Greek Revival residence, circa 1840, retains much of its original feeling. Standing on the front stoop you can watch the sun setting over the Hudson, and, if you are lucky, the QE2 may be passing. At street level you will see an alleyway entrance, once a "horsewalk" that led to a two-story building at the rear. The stable disappeared many years ago, and what is left is a large garden which all guests are encouraged to enjoy. Sitting in the garden in the evening, you can see the lights of The Empire State Building, a beacon to the north. Inside, the parlor floor is filled with antiques and paintings.

A curved staircase leads to the second floor where three rooms are available for guests. There are two large double rooms, one with a queen size bed and the other with twin beds. Both rooms have air conditioning, light, views and comfortable furnishings. The large modern bathroom is shared by the guests on that floor. The innkeeper is a painter and the 3rd floor is her own pied-a-terre and studio. There is also a single room on that floor that shares a bathroom with her.
